Excel: Breaking Links that won't Break

Like in life, maintaining links are important. They help you go back to your history and reminds you of who, what and how you are when you began (source files *wink) But if you have no use for that link and it turns out annoying and adds to your baggage (adds to your file size *sighs) it's time to BREAK it!

Break it!

Break it!

Now to break a link, you just go to the Data tab -> Edit Links.

You will be prompted to select which annoying useless link to break, then hit Break Links.

You have to give to it to Excel to be oh-so positive. After painstakingly thinking through it and deciding to break the link, it will give you a warning: This cannot be undone.

And the default option is to cancel, how very sweet of Excel

After hitting Break Links yet again, you now have  the peace of mind of being free from the stresses and burden of unwanted links.

So you go out with your friends,

play with your dog,

only to go back, open the file and the past come surging back ( cliche bomb!)

What is wrong!?

I have tried to get rid of you but you keep coming back! I don't want you in my life anymore!

Ahem. Right, before we get carried away here, the solution? Check your named ranges.

Apparently, named ranges also carry links and they are not removed by breaking links like I showed you above. You have to delete the names containing the links you don't want one by one.

Here's how you do it:
1. Go to Name Manager under the Formulas Tab.

2. Then delete the names whose "Refers to" begins with a path

Goodbye my almost lover. Goodbye my hopeless dream

3. Viola! Enjoy your link free file! *Don't forget to save!
